But Karilee was out of sight. There was a flash, and the sound of a shot echoed around the deadspace. The light from within the tunnel went out, leaving the deadspace in darkness.
Jo ran forward. She thought she could hear heavy, gasping breaths, but she wasn’t sure. The blood was pounding in her ears.
She sensed movement ahead, saw the flare of a taper.
Karilee. Shadows danced on his face. He was aiming the gun, one-handed.
‘Don’t shoot Mike!’ she begged. ‘Please!’
‘I’m not going to.’ Karilee’s voice was even, calm.
Jo became aware that the gasping breaths were getting louder.
She looked ahead, saw Omonu, blood streaming down his face, staggering forward blindly.
Karilee fired, and Omonu tumbled backward, landing awkwardly on the floor. He was still breathing, great heaving shuddering movements, but as Jo watched they subsided.
She stepped forward. ‘Mike?’
Silence.
‘I think it may be too late for your friend,’ said Karilee solemnly.
‘Nonsense. That can’t –’ Jo broke off, as she noticed Mike’s legs trailing over the top of the stairs behind the carcass of Omonu.
The trousers were drenched in blood.
‘Mike?’ She climbed the stairs quickly, stopped when she saw the blood-filled pit in Mike’s chest, the cold, glazed-over eyes.
‘Mike!’ she shrieked. The stairs seemed to drift up towards her, and her vision blurred. ‘No,’ she moaned.
‘You can’t die. This is impossible.’
She crumpled on to the clay. Cold, dead clay. Clay filled with Mike’s blood.
After a while, she noticed that Karilee’s arms were around her shoulders. ‘It has happened,’ he said gently. ‘Your friend is Dead.’
And Jo screamed.

colyte-Ordinary Iikeelu flew steadily in the near darkness, her Abody tense with expectation, the night air cold under her wings. Ahead, the dark mass that was the sun already eclipsed Kaygat, the city of men, and the Temples of the Edge: she could see the curved line that marked its rim steadily advancing against the dim flightways of the Sky as she flew closer. Every time she made this journey, Iikeelu realized afresh how huge the sun was, and how great the mystery that held it in the air between Land and Sky.
It was hard to believe that the Sky could just be destroyed. And by a man – a primitive, wingless, childish man She wondered if Xaai’s story was true, whether they might have misinterpreted the story of the fallen sun in the alien Land.
The inside of the sun is hollow.
The inside stays cold when the outside is hot.
The sun can fly where it wants – but only if the Sky is broken.
Those were the implications of Xaai’s story. They might not be true. Xaai’s jumbled memories of her last hours as a man were certain to be confused. But her information tied in with what was already known about Epreto’s activities.
Iikeelu could see the guards’ lights now, forming a misty necklace around the dark body of the sun. The gondola was there ahead of her, its lights doused, visible only as a shadow in the middle of the army. Iikeelu tacked, pushing her body into the wind, feeling the turbulence, the dancing of the air, racing across her body.
